The mentality of being rich and poor
The mentality of being rich and poor
Mentality is a matter of how we see things based on our belief system. As a young man growing up in Indianapolis, Indiana, I grew up being very poor. My stepfather was a hard working man but he never made more then $13,500 a year. So I was always doing without. I was never talked to about saving money or investing it. I only heard the complaints about their not being enough to buy all the things that we wanted. I myself went without a lot and never had the things that other kids had in other neighborhoods with more money.
I noticed as I made my way into other neighborhoods looking for more friends and girlfriends the houses were nicer and so were the cars. They had dinner with each other at the table and were polite to one another. Their play clothes would have been nice school clothes for me. Then I would hear the parents talking about investing and having a savings and putting away 10% of their money in their savings accounts at the bank. I thought how weird to have money left over after paying bills and then to invest it without going out and buying silly things with. I learned that wealthy people think of their assets as employees. They wanted to know how each dollar they have left over can make more money for them and how it can secure their future. The poor people that I knew, myself included, all wanted to know what we could buy next if we had any money left over at all which was seldom.
The rich people had the mentality of I can have my cake with my favorite icing and eat it as well. Because they knew that their money was making them money and securing their family future. My poor family lived only in the moment and immediate gratification. And when we spent what we had it was someone else’s fault that we had no money to buy other things with. I also noticed that the other neighbors who were rich had higher educations and owned their own companies. And I even knew some people who had no education and just a lot of drive and desire to be wealthy and they were. It was all mentality. I begin to study being rich with a vengeance and found some very interesting facts that I used to become wealthy. I also found the balance of having wealth and being humble. It is all about mentality. Creotology Personal Development will follow up with another article on the “Mentality of Wealth” on part 2 of this blog tomorrow.
